Instore Murals

When Coles approached me in 2021 to feature my art in their new store, the brief called for the murals to reflect on three key pillars; Community, Sustainability and Diversity. It also instructed to ‘bring the outside in,’ and contain elements of delight that might make people look twice.

I’m not the type of artist who practices iteration. In design work - yes, absolutely - iteration tends to produce the strongest work in the shortest time. But I’m not interested in that as an artist. As an artist I have freedom of time, which means I can use the first idea I have, and keep working on it until it’s strong.

Perhaps I should alter the way I create my commercial art so it aligns more with my design process than my art process. As it was apparently quite unusual to approach Coles with three loose ideas, shown here in the GIF, so they could choose which idea I would work on until it was strong.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
They helped me out by choosing one, so that was good.

Final measurements are very rarely final. The dimensions of the artwork I called ‘Panel B’ was changed significantly just before I was preparing these files for print. I much prefer the version I had worked on for so long. You can see in the photo how much I had to change the art to fit the final dimensions last minute.
